Deep Dive DC: Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #1
It is no secret that we love crossovers here on the blog, and today’s subject matter is one of the big ones, particularly for yours truly. There’s a lot of Who Would Wins out there. And while some anime fans on Twitter like to suck all the fun out of it, it can still be fun to think about sometimes. And for me, one of my fictional dream matches is Superman vs. Godzilla. The Man of Steel and The King of the Monsters in a knock down drag out fight to the finish, I have goosebumps and possibly an erection just thinking about it. Frankly, as far as I’m concerned, throwing King Kong and the rest of the Justice League into the mix is just a bonus, I’m already guaranteed to get what I needed. So, let’s get started and see how this crossover shakes out.
We open with Clark Kent and Lois Lane having a romantic dinner on top of the daily planet where they first met. Clark recounts the events of that day by saying he was in awe of Lois’s intelligence and sophistication. Clark then shocks Lois by getting down on one knee to propose. However, this tender moment is interrupted when Godzilla rises out of the water outside the city.
We cut to twelve hours earlier on the Justice League Watchtower where Flash, Supergirl and Green Lantern are commenting on how Supes has been burning the candle at both ends lately. It seems that after Clark proposes to Lois, he’s planning on going on vacation so he’s making sure he puts out as many disasters as he can before then. On the view screen, we see Superman flying toward something that looks like King Kong, but it’s a fake out. What Superman is actually fighting is a giant robot ape called Titano. Since Titano shoots Kryptonite lasers from its eyes, Flash and GL head out to lend Supes a hand. However, by the time The Flash, who I’ll remind you is The Fastest Man Alive, gets there, Superman has already dispatched the massive mechanical monkey. As they drag the big robot to Strykers Island Prison, Flash and the other Justice Leaguers wish Clark the best on taking the big step with Lois. Wonder Woman in particular wishes Clark all the best in a genuinely sweet moment.
Meanwhile, at The Legion of Doom, Giganta, Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta, Cheetah, Captain Cold and Toy Man are sick of always getting beat by the Justice League. As the villains bicker amongst themselves, Lex Luthor enters the room and says he has a plan to take Superman and the League off the board once and for all.
To that end, the villains break into Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. See, Supes has a lot of dangerous and powerful gadgets in his arctic man cave and Lex thinks a few of them could be used to send the Justice League to the Phantom Zone.
Meanwhile, and Clark’s apartment, he’s visited by Bruce Wayne. Bruce, like the rest of his League, offers his sincere best wishes to Clark, but being Batman, he also asks Clark if he’s considered all the risks involved given the life they both lead. Clark insists that he can protect Lois from anyone who may leverage her against him and that seems good enough for Bruce. Clark hears an alarm at the fortress, but assures Clark that Kara and the others are already on top of it.
At the Fortress, the Justice League battles the Legion of Doom, but an incident with the Mother Box teleports the villains to god knows where. God knows where turns out to be the world of Godzilla, a world densely populated by giant monsters. To make things even more interesting, the bad guys have landed smack dab in the middle of Skull Island, the domain of King Kong. While the rest of the Legion runs for a nearby bunker, Grodd takes one look at the Mighty Kong and has apparently found his new religion, bowing before Kong and worshiping the Giant as his new God.
In the bunker, Lex and the others learn about the Monster problem of this Universe, Toyman viewing the creatures as the ultimate toys, and, using a trinket he nicked from the fortress that evidently grants wishes, wishes all the monsters into the DC Universe.
And so our comic ends back where it began with Superman flying towards Godzilla.
Funny thing about this comic, I should have found it boring. The issue is very dialogue heavy and the giant monsters are barely in it. But, weirdly enough, I loved this first issue. I loved the Justice League just chatting like friends and wishing their buddy the best as he’s about to propose to the love of his life. I especially liked the scene between Superman and Batman, showing that despite their ideological differences, they really are best friends. Shame more writers can’t wrap their head around that. The stuff with the Legion was great too. I actually found the bickering between them to be really funny and Grodd bending the knee before King Kong made me laugh. Finally, the final panel of Superman flying towards Godzilla as The King of the Monsters towers over the skyscrapers of Metropolis is one of the most hype things I have ever seen in my entire life. I cannot wait for more.
