Lucha Underground Season 3 Episode 25: Left For Dead
Welcome ladies and Gentlemen to another episode of Lucha Underground. This week, we’ll be finishing off the first round of the Cueto Cup, so let us waste no further time.
We open with Dante Fox jogging on the streets of Boyle Heights when he has a flashback to his time in Afghanistan. We see him getting captured by the enemy while his brother in arms, Killshot, left him for dead. We also see the torture he endured until he was eventually rescued. As we flash back to reality, we see Killshot on top of a building stalking him comrade turned hated rival and making the finger-gun motion at him as if to say “I’m coming for you.”
Match #1: Sexy Star vs. PJ Black: Cueto Cup 1st Round Match
Sexy Star has nothing but contempt for The World Wide Underground after they cost her the Lucha Underground Title, so tonight she’s looking for some payback. However, the high-flying Darewolf, PJ Black is not an opponent to be taken lightly as he gives Sexy a run for her money. Another thing to look out for with the World Wide Underground is that they don’t play fair. As such, Taya comes out to the ring to hand PJ a pair of Brass Knuckles. Remembering how Johnny did the same thing to steal her Lucha Underground Title, isn’t about to be fooled twice and kicks them right out of PJ’s hand. However, when Sexy tries to use the knucks herself, the ref catches and disqualifies her.
Winner by DQ: PJ Black
After the match, the World Wide Underground retreated as Sexy, in a moment of rage, decks the ref with the brass knuckles, nice!
Match #2: Son of Havoc vs. Son of Madness: Cueto Cup 1st Round Match
Out first is Lucha Underground’s favorite Underdog, Son of Havoc, but out next is the Temple newcomer we revealed at the end of last week, the mysterious Son of Madness. As the lumbering Biker makes his way out to the ring, Havoc looked as though he had seen a ghost. It’s clear from their outfits and the way the look at each other that these two have history, and that history ain’t altogether pleasant.
This wasn’t so much a match as it was a brawl. Whatever beef they have with one another must run deep because Havoc runs straight at Madness and Madness spends most of the match punishing Havoc. This was a great fight between two bearded brawling biker badasses. (Kobra Moon isn’t in this week’s episode so I have to get my alliteration fix somewhere.) After a hard fought match, Havoc wins with a roll-up.
Winner: Son of Havoc
However, Havoc doesn’t have much time to celebrate because as soon as he turns around, he eats a big boot from Madness. With Havoc laid out, Madness takes his leave, but not before stealing Havoc’s biker jacket, a sign of great disrespect in biker culture.
Match #3: Prince Puma vs. Ricky Mandel: Cueto Cup 1st Round Match
Ricky, what did you think was going to happen? Puma is one of the most celebrated stars in the temple and kicked the shit out of a killer death spirit a few weeks ago. Ricky Mandel taken down without a fuss and Puma didn’t even have to remove his hoodie.
Winner (Obviously): Prince Puma
After the match, we go back stage to see El Dragon Azteca Jr. warming up for his next match. As it happens, Rey Mysterio has decided to take a break from training for his big title match against Johnny Mundo in order to support his student at ringside tonight. Both mentor and protégé wish each other good luck in their upcoming matches and Azteca says that it would be a honor to face his teacher in the main event of Ultima Lucha trace. However, that’s when Prince Puma steps out of the Shadows to say that he also hopes Rey beats Johnny Mundo so that he can get his rematch from Ultima Lucha Dos, but this time, he won’t lose. As Puma skulks off, Azteca fumes at his former friend, but Rey calms him by placing his hand on his Azteca’s shoulder and saying, “one match at a time.”
Main Event: El Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. Dante Fox: Cueto Cup 1st Round Match
Even with Rey Mysterio at his side, Azteca still struggled against the deadly and precise Dante Fox. Dragon Azteca is one of if not the fastest fighter in the temple, but speed can only get you so far when facing an opponent with Dante Fox’s skill. This match was incredibly and more than worthy of the main event. The hits just kept coming from both Luchadores, and neither one let up for a second. There were amazing strikes, flashy maneuvers and counters so fast you could blink and miss them. However, Rey Mysterio made a fatal mistake by coming to the ring, as it left him vulnerable to an attack from Johnny Mundo and his minions, including the long absent Jack Evans. In the chaos, Dante Fox took advantage and picked up the win with the Fox Catcher.
Winner: Dante Fox
Match of the Night Obviously giving it to Dragon Azteca vs. Dante Fox, this match blew the roof off the temple and showcased too of its top tier talents. It could have gone either way but I’m glad Dante got the win but only because he was my bracket pick.
Spot of The Night: I’m giving it to the Spanish Fly C4 by Azteca onto Dante Fox. No specific reason, I just thought it looked cool.
Segment of the Night: Going with Puma confronting Rey and Azteca backstage. I just love how menacing Puma comes across here. Puma’s turn to the Darkside was due in large part to his loss to Rey Mysterio last season and I like that they haven’t forgotten that storyline.
But wait, we’re not done! It’s episode 25, and you all know what that means. It’s time to name the frontrunner for the Wes’s Blogs and Reviews Lucha Underground MVP and… for the second period in a row, our frontrunner is…
DARIO CUETO
Yup, in five episodes, no one was able knock El Jefe off the top of the mountain, though not for lack of trying on the part of the likes of Prince Puma, Drago and The Mack, each of whom were a mere point away from the prize. However, even if they do, our boy Dario will still be the boss and one of the sleaziest, and yet coolest mother f*ckers on the planet.
Final Thoughts: Well, the first round of the Cueto Cup has drawn to a close but we still have a ton of great matches to look forward to. Who is Son of Madness and what is his connection to Havoc. Will Killshot get his revenge on Dante Fox? How will Sexy Star retaliate against the World Wide Underground? Will Rey and Puma ever get their rematch? These answers will have to wait.
