Top 20 Dragon Ball Abridged Moments #8
I'd always thought Tien Shinhan was a really cool character, even long before I saw him in Dragon Ball. Depending on who you ask, he's one of, if not the strongest regular human in the entire show. He has a ton of cool techniques and the third eye makes him stand out. However, the sad truth is, Tien didn't really get to do a whole lot in the early days of Z. Like many of the others, he got himself killed by the Saiyans early on and spent the entire Frieza saga dead. When I finally saw how cool he was in Dragon Ball, it made Tien's treatment in early Z even more unfortunate. However, in one of my favorite moments in both the main series and the abridged series, Tien got to regain his badass status and then some. 8. Fuck Power Levels, Fuck Super Saiyans and Fuck You!
As the Saiyans and Namekians kept gaining new forms and getting stronger, and the threats they faced kept growing deadlier, many of the human Z Fighters unfortunately found themselves left in the dust. One individual who wasn't exactly pleased with being reduced to the role of spectator. Once the villainous Cell had absorbed Android 17 allowing his power to drastically increase, Tien couldn't take it anymore and called out the monstrous creature. Cell, upon seeing the three-eyed warrior, mocked him for his comparatively unimpressive power-level. At that point, Tien had had enough and after saying the colorful line above, went all out hitting Cell with energy blast after energy blast, driving Cell further and further into the ground.
What I love about this scene in both versions is that none of this is about killing Cell, not really. Tien went into this fight knowing full well that he probably wouldn't walk away from it, and he didn't care. Tien is one of the strongest fighters on the planet and one of a few who can say they've defeated Goku one on one, and he wants everyone, especially Cell to remember that. Even if all he manages to do is stall the monster, he will make sure that he goes out like a warrior and that Cell will remember his name. This, in my opinion, is Tien's greatest moment and TFS handled it perfectly. Well done.
