Lucha Underground Season 3 Episode 12: Every Woman is Sexy, Every Woman is a Star
Hello my fellow believers, I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. I know that I have a lot to be thankful for, and Lucha Underground most definitely falls under that category. Last week in Aztec Warfare, we saw Sexy Star make history by becoming Lucha Underground Champion, but tonight, she has to defend that title against a man who’s as talented as he is arrogant, Johnny Mundo. We open with yet another vignette for the rabbit tribe, only this time, we end with, “Tick Tock, They’re here.” Yes indeed, after weeks of buildup, tonight we finally get to see Paul London and his Rabbit Tribe in action and not only that, they’ll be challenging for the trios titles.
Match #1: Drago, Aerostar & Fenix vs. The Rabbit Tribe: Trios Title Match
As this match was airing, I noticed a few people on social media wondering why The Rabbit Tribe was getting a title match when this is their first night in the temple. To that I say, if this were WWE, I’d agree that they don’t deserve it, but this is Lucha Underground, and remember, throwing curveballs at his champions to the end of creating chaos and violence is very much in character for Dario Cueto. Besides, the Rabbit Tribe has a veteran like Paul London leading them into battle, and Paul London is no ordinary rabbit. He’s a rabbit with a vicious streak a mile wide! He’s a killer! Look at the bones! (Monty Python quote for every occasion)
Anywho, right from the moment the Rabbit Tribe made their entrance we knew we were in for something fun and exciting. As if in a psychedelic haze, Paul London and his cohorts, Mala Suerte and Saltador glide into the temple. I almost cannot describe it. It’s as if the temple had been mesmerized by their mere presence, but then, that may have just been Paul London’s outfit. Earlier, I compared it to Tom Petty, but not that I’ve seen it in full, I definitely get more of a David Bowie from Labrynth vibe, right down to the bulging codpiece. The trios champions were out next and what followed was a very exciting and very fun match. The Rabbit Tribe employed a very unique offense that seemed to be designed to keep the champions off balance. The highlight of the match was a devastating super kick by Paul London onto Fenix. However, As impressive as the Rabbits were in their debut, they ultimately came up short when Fenix pinned Saltador.
Winners: Drago, Aerostar & Fenix
After the match, we heard the familiar shrill hiss of Lucha Underground’s Slithering Psychotic Sexy Seductive Sapphire Serpentine Senorita, Kobra Moon. (I’d saddle her with still more superlatives but my supply s-words is sadly somewhat scarce) Kobra says that sooner or later, Drago will be made to bow before his queen.
We then go to the locker room where Sexy Star is smiling as she holds her newly acquired title belt when The Mack walks in. At first, Mack taunts Sexy and says that he should have been the one to win Aztec Warfare last week, but he’s only playing around. In reality, Mack could not be more proud of his friend and offers his congratulations as the two embrace. Mack says that Johnny’s more than likely going to try something shady in their match tonight and offers to be in Sexy’s corner but Sexy refuses. Sexy needs to show the world that her win last week was no fluke and to do that, she needs to go it alone. Still, Mack wishes her the best of luck as they bump fists.
Match #2: Killshot vs. Dante Fox
Now I personally don’t know if AR Fox and Shane Strickland (the man behind Killshot’s mask) have any actual history outside of Lucha Underground, but I will say this, they wrestle one another like two men who know each other as well as the comrades in arms that they are supposed to be. This was a very fast match, with each man seeming to have an answer for the other’s respective offenses. There were tons of quick strikes and very impressive spots, including a series of cutters “outta nowhere” that put Randy Orton to shame. However, all good things must come to an end, and after hitting his devastating finisher, now known as the Foxcatcher, Dante pulls out the win.
Winner: Dante Fox
Next up, we go to Dario’s office where El Jefe is visited by Johnny Mundo. Johnny is ready for his title match tonight, but right now he’s more concerned with the man who cost him Aztec Warfare, Angelico. As it turns out, Johnny’s Agent/Lawyer has drawn up a restraining order that would keep Angelico away from Johnny. Dario agrees to honor it, for now, but even he can’t keep him away from Johnny forever. Johnny leaves as both men insult the other under their breaths.
Presumably later in the evening, we see Dario return to his office only to find his associate, Black Lotus sitting in his chair. Dario welcomes Lotus home and says he likes what she and her Triad did to Pentagon last week, so, as a homecoming gift, next week, Pentagon Dark will face all members of the Black Lotus Triad in a gauntlet match.
Main Event: Sexy Star vs. Johnny Mundo: Lucha Underground Title Match
This is it. Since the beginning of this season, Johnny and Sexy have been on a collision course, and now it is all coming to a head. At the start of the match, Johnny dominated Sexy, using his size and strength to his advantage. Johnny may be full of himself, but he’s not stupid. Johnny knows that Sexy is not an opponent to be taken lightly and if you give her an inch of space, she’ll take advantage. To that end, Johnny stayed on Sexy and utilized the ground and pound offense that he’s come to be known for in the temple. However, eventually, Sexy started taking advantage and gaining the upper hand. As the two bitter enemies brawled to the outside, a desperate Johnny grabbed a crutch from a fan in the a Sexy Star Mask and tried to use it to take down Sexy once and for all. After Sexy managed to take the crutch out of Johnny’s hands, the kind-hearted champion went to help the injured fan back to her feet. However, much to the shock of the entire temple, the fan nailed Sexy in the jaw with a pair of brass knuckles. Ever the opportunist, Johnny rolls Sexy back into the ring and with one devastating End of the World, Johnny Mundo became the new, Lucha Underground Champion.
Winner and New Lucha Underground Champion: Johnny Mundo
After the match, the mysterious fan removes her disguise to reveal herself as Taya and that this had been planned by the World Wide Underground all along. And so, as Jack Evans and PJ Black join in the celebration, Lucha Underground goes off the air with a chorus of deafening boos, drowned out only by the damn near biblical mark out of our good friend John over at TwitWow
Match of the Night:
Personally, I found that this was one of those nights where any of the matches could have taken the spot. While I feel most would probably give it to Killshot vs. Dante Fox or the title main event, I have never been one to follow popular opinion for the sake of it. With that in mind, tonight, match of the night goes to the debut of the Rabbit Tribe. I honestly cannot help myself. I’ve been looking forward to seeing these guys make their debut since I first heard that they were a thing, and now that they’ve finally debuted, I am not disappointed. They have this incredibly mesmerizing presence to them as I said, but beneath that there are three incredible athletes. Speaking of, take nothing away from the champions. Drago, Fenix & Aerostar are a cohesive unit and work incredibly together just as they always have. The champions may have emerged victorious this week, but I doubt this is the last we’ve seen of the Rabbit Tribe.
Spot of the Night: I’m definitely giving it to the springboard Spanish fly into the Fox Catcher by Dante Fox, the move he used to put Killshot away. In his very short time in Lucha Underground, Dante Fox has managed to impress me and the rest of the believers and cement himself as one of the most solid athletes in the temple
Segment of the Night: I think I’ll give it to Mack and Sexy in the locker room. I’ve always loved Mack and Sexy’s relationship. They have this brother-sister sort of chemistry with one another and it’s really sweet.
Final Thoughts: This episode gave us the long awaited debut of the Rabbit Tribe, a phenomenal match between Killshot and Dante Fox, but I think what we all really want to talk about is the title change. I’ll start by saying that I am a huge fan of Sexy Star and I’m disappointed that her title reign wasn’t as long as it deserved to be. That having been said, I have been a fan of Johnny Mundo since way back in his WWE days and if you ask me, a world title reign is something that has long been overdue for this man. And so, to you Johnny, I offer my sincere congratulations. It is about damn time. I wish Johnny the best of luck in his Lucha Underground Title reign. With Sexy due a rematch, Angelico gunning for his hide and a now unhinged and unpredictable Matanza lurking in the shadows, he's going to need it. However, before we sign off for the evening, we have a special treat for you courtesy of our friends at TwitWow. However, before we get to that, I would like to give a big thank you to our friends John and Ashton. You guys have been a big help to me with these articles both directly and indirectly and I appreciate it a great deal. Keep up the good work fellas. I encourage all my readers to check out their youtube channel if you haven’t already. And now, for your viewing pleasure, I give to you, John of TwitWow, the biggest Johnny Mundo fan in the whole of creation, marking out so hard I’m pretty sure that it resulted in a tear in the fabric of reality itself.
