Lucha Underground Season 3 Episode 6: The Open Road to Revenge

Welcome back once again to my favorite article to write each week. I apologize if it’s being posted a day or two late, but we’re here now so let’s dive right in.

We open in the locker room with El Dragon Azteca Jr. getting ready for his match against Pentagon Dark later tonight. However, Chavo is not too pleased about how his match with Azteca two weeks ago went down and proceeds to go to town on the kid with a steel chair. The scene is shot excellently, with much of it being shown from Azteca’s point of view. Later, Rey comes in to find his beaten pupil. As great as this scene is, the thing that prevents it from making segment of the night was the incredibly silly moment of Rey yelling “CHAVO” like he’s Captain Kirk in Wrath of Khan. As amusing as it is, it’s a bit corny for my taste and undercuts the dramatic impact the scene is intended to have, but enough of that, let’s go to the ring for out first match.

Match #1: Son of Havoc & Mascarita Sagrada vs. Dr. Wagner Jr. & Famous B

The match starts with Wagner and B already in the ring, accompanied by the beautiful Brenda (Hellooooooo Nurse!). Mascarita and Havoc ride in on a Motorcycle with the little guy in a sidecar. As a side note, any time Mascarita gives Wagner & Famous B the middle finger, it cracks me up.

Despite the obvious comedy setup, this was actually an impressive match, with all four men showing great athleticism. Mascarita was particularly impressive in this match, showcasing some incredible agility and even more incredible strength, particularly for a man his size. However, despite a valiant effort by our two underdogs, the combination of Wagner and Famous B managed to come out on top, B even getting a cocky pin on Mascarita using his stethoscope.

Winners: Dr. Wagner Jr. & Famous B

After the match, we get another promo telling us to follow the white rabbit and that they’ll be here soon.

Match #2: Sexy Star vs. Jack Evans: Gift of the Gods Title Match

Before we go any further, I just have to say how great it is to have Jack cutting promos again. See, for the last several weeks, Jack’s been dealing with an injury that forced him to have his jaws wired shut. True, Jack has managed to be pretty charismatic even without the use of his voice, but seeing him cut loose and return to his full annoying and cocky glory just feels right.

Once again we have a seriously impressive bout. Jack, as he always does, played an superb cocky heel while still showcasing some amazing athleticism and agility, while Sexy herself was also pretty darn impressive. As the matched progressed the other members of the World Wide Underground got involved as did the trios champions. In the midst of the chaos, Sexy managed to pull out the victory, retaining her title.

Winner: Sexy Star

Next up, we go to Dario’s office where Chavo is demanding to replace Dragon Azteca in the main event against Pentagon Dark. However, the two are interrupted by a pissed off Rey Mysterio who demands a match against Chavo. Chavo feigns innocence to the attack on Rey’s pupil and acts offended that Rey is willing to throw away twenty five years of friendship, but Rey sees right through Chavo and the two start brawling on the spot, much to Dario’s delight. Dario, impressed by this display of violence, decides to grant both of their requests. Tonights main event will be a three way match between Rey Mysterio, Chavo Guerrero and Pentagon Dark, and that match is next.

Main Event: Rey Mysterio vs. Pentagon Dark vs. Chavo Guerrero

Do I even need to say that this was a great match? I mean, look at the three wrestlers involved. All three of these guys can put on main event matches very easily. Surprisingly, Chavo and Pentagon worked together quite a bit to take down Rey, but eventually they remembered that they’re supposed to hate one another and started going at it. After a long and hard fought battle, Pentagon was the one who emerged victorious after hitting a devastating package pile driver on Mysterio, continuing his dominant streak and redeeming his loss against Rey back at the beginning of the season.

Winner: Pentagon Dark After the match, Chavo beat Rey down with a chair and posed in the ring as the crowd boos to end the show.

Match of the Night: It is an incredibly close call here between all three matches here, but, gun to my head, I have to give it to Sexy Star vs. Jack Evans. Seeing Jack back in his full heel glory is nice and it’s equally enjoyable to see Sexy look so dominant. I particularly liked Sexy’s modified Gory Bomb.

Spot of the Night: The aforementioned Gory Bomb almost took this spot, but I have to give it to Son of Havoc tossing Mascarita Sagrada over his shoulders allowing his partner to execute a perfect hurricanrana on Famous B. Impressive teamwork on the part of both individuals.

Segment of the Night: Without a doubt, this goes to Rey and Chavo in Dario Cueto’s office. The tension between Rey and Chavo is nice, but the real star of this one is El Jefe, who is absolutely delightful in how sadistically giddy he is at the sight of violence. It’s just further evidence as to why Dario is the best character in the wrestling industry today.

Final Thoughts: While this episode wasn’t as story heavy as usual, it still gave us three stellar matches. While not the strongest outing for season three thus far, it was still a fine entry in the series.
