Lucha Underground Season 3 Episode 4: Brothers in Broken Arms

Welcome back once again to the awesomeness that is Lucha Underground. We open tonight in the locker room with Sexy Star. Dario Cueto comes up to her to taunt her situation. She can either continue to defend the Gift of the Gods title and eventually lose it, or cash it in and inevitably get destroyed by Matanza. Sexy says she’s not afraid, but Dario tells her that she should be. He also says that later tonight, she’ll be teaming with Drago, Fenix and Aerostar to take on the World Wide Underground. As Dario leaves, Johnny Mundo barges in and like the arrogant dick that he is, smugly introduces himself to Sexy and says that he’s the next Gift of the Gods champion. Sexy stares him down as we go to the ring for our first match.

Match #1: Prince Puma vs. Siniestro de la Muerte

Siniestro de la Muerte is the last of Mil Muertes’s disciples of death. What happened to the rest of them you may ask? Well, Siniestro killed them all. As you know, Puma’s been gunning for Mil Muertes this season, and what better way to start than by taking out one of his minions.

This was actually a really great match, but then, when dealing with a great talent like Prince Puma (known as Ricochet outside of Lucha Underground), that’s just par for the course. Puma is a five-star match magnet and always brings out the best in his opponents, and this match is certainly no exception. Both athletes kept the pace of the match quick with a lot of good strikes, counters and high-flying moves. Matt Striker and Vampiro made a point to note that Puma seems to have grown more aggressive this season and it shows in this match. However, take nothing away from Siniestro, who gives his best performance to date here in this match.

Half way through, Mil Muertes tried to get involved, but Puma tossed him out of the ring and hit Mil’s own finisher on Siniestro to win the match.

Winner: Prince Puma

After the match, Puma wasted no time going after Mil. The two brawled for a bit, but eventually Catrina held Mil back.

Next up, we go to Dario Cueto’s office where we see Cortez Castro enter. Bare in mind, we now know that Dario knows that Castro is a cop thanks to Joey Ryan. Much to the shock of Cortez, and myself, Dario offers Castro a hug and offers his condolences for the death of Mr. Cisco. The tension in this scene is just amazing. Both men know that the other is out to get them, but they need to play nice for now, Cortez to maintain his cover, and Dario because screwing with his victims is fun for him. The entire time, I keep waiting for Dario to bash Castro’s head in or something, but instead, Dario does something far worse, he puts him in a match against Pentagon Dark.

Match #2: Cortez Castro vs. Pentagon Dark

This match went exactly how you would have expected it to go. Pentagon squashes Cortez, finally getting a win as Pentagon Dark, stares down Vampiro at the commentary table, and then snaps Cortez’s arm. Simple as that.

Winner: Pentagon Dark

After the match, Pentagon cut a promo on the upcoming main event match between Chavo Guerrero and El Dragon Azteca Jr. and reminds us all that he’s Pentagon Dark and he has zero fear.

Match #2: Fenix, Aerostar, Drago & Sexy Star vs. The World Wide Underground

Like last week, this was a fantastic match and the addition of Johnny and Sexy to the mix only added to the chaos. We hit all the great notes. WWU played great heels, Jack Evans acted like a cocky asshole, the champions got in a lot of impressive double team spots, and of course, the utter chaos at the end of the match. Ultimately the WWU got the win when Jack Evans pinned Sexy Star, but the brutality of the match was clearly felt as sexy suffered a swollen eye and Taya apparently suffered a serious leg injury.

Winners: World Wide Underground

Next up, we go to the back where Siniestro de la Muerte is begging the forgiveness of Mil and Catrina. Unfortunately for Siniestro, he does not receive it. Instead, Catrina snaps his neck, sucks out his soul like she’s freaking Shang Tsung and then transfers that energy into Mil Muertes as his eyes glow red. Mil then vows to ensure the same thing happens to Puma

Main Event: Chavo Guerrero vs. El Dragon Azteca Jr. w/ special guest referee Rey Mysterio

This was yet another really great match, which is to be expected given the caliber of athletes we’re dealing with here. The match started out slow paced with a lot of impressive grappling, submission moves and mat wrestling. However, things soon picked up speed once Dragon Azteca started taking control and changing the pace of the match to one that better suits his style. Surprisingly, Rey called the match pretty clean until Chavo attacked him in frustration. Instead of disqualifying Chavo as would have been his right as the official, Rey hit Chavo with an elbow allowing Azteca to capitalize and get the win. Winner: El Dragon Azteca Jr.

Our final segment brings us to Hong Kong where we see Dario’s bodyguard, Black Lotus. See, like El Dragon Azteca Jr. and Rey Mysterio, Lotus here was trained by the original Dragon Azteca. However, once she was told by Dario Cueto that Dragon Azteca was the man responsible for the death of her family, she turned on her mentor and took his life. At Ultima Lucha Dos, she tried to take the mask of the man who allegedly betrayed her from El Dragon Azteca Jr. but that match was interrupted by Pentagon Dark. Now, Lotus is gearing up for revenge against the man with zero fear and she’s enlisted the aid of the Black Lotus Triad to show him what fear really is.

Awards: Keep in mind, next week, as well as every episode that ends in five or zero, we will be revealing the front-runner for the award of Wes’s Blogs and reviews Lucha Underground MVP. Match of the Night: If I could declare a tie, I would, but there can only be one winner, so, despite the absolute awesomeness of Puma vs. Siniestro, I have to give it to Chavo Guerrero vs. El Dragon Azteca Jr. Both matches were fun and showed the combatants at their best, but Chavo/Azteca had a little more mat-based grappling, which is something I appreciate. As such, point goes to the main event of the evening.

Spot of the Night: For the first time, the spot of the night does not come from the match of the night. While it wasn’t the most flashy move we’ve seen this season or even in that match, there’s just something about Puma staring defiantly into the piercing red eyes of Mil Muertes as he destroys his disciple with Mil’s own finisher, the flat-liner, that just makes me mark out.

Segment of the Night: Again, if I could tie it up with Cortez in Dario’s office I would, but gun to my head, I pick Catrina sucking out Siniestro’s soul. I just love it any time Lucha Underground kills off a character. It serves as a reminder that this is not your typical pro-wrestling product, but rather a television show that just happens to be about wrestling.

Final Thoughts: As is to be expected, this week’s show was awesome. We continued some of the interesting stories that we’ve been building up this season and we got some great matches. It was especially great to see Puma back in action. After all these seasons, Puma is still very much the face of Lucha Underground and the man creates magic any time he steps in the ring.
