Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #7 Review
When we last left the Power Rangers, the mysterious and powerful Black Dragon arrived and quickly made short work of the Rangers, capturing Billy and using his deadly breath to sever the Rangers’ (with the exception of Tommy) connection to the Morphing Grid. Now depowered, our heroes can only look on in horror from the safety of a pocket dimension as Rita and her army takes over the ruined command center.
We open with Billy in Goldar’s dark dimension. Billy quickly learns he’s not alone as Goldar is also there, but much to Billy’s surprise, Goldar is in chains. Goldar explains that he is in chains because he failed his queen but when Billy asks why this failure is different than any of his other failures, Goldar just scowls and threatens the blue ranger not to ask any more questions.
At the ruins of the command center, while the Black Dragon uses his powers to awaken the dormant zords, Rita is busy remodeling the control room, placing her new throne where Zordon’s tube used to be. Rita orders the remains of Alpha-5 be melted down and made into a lamp, but what she doesn’t notice is that the light in alphas visor is still on, meaning he may still be functioning.
In the pocket dimension, the Rangers try to fix their Morphers, but the problem isn’t with their gear, but with the Morphing Grid itself. Also, since Tommy’s powers came from Rita, his connection to the grid is different from that of his fellow Rangers, explaining why he still has his powers. Speaking of Tommy, he’s feeling sorry for himself when Kimberly comes along to give him a pep talk. However, that’s interrupted by Rita making a global broadcast calling for all world leaders to surrender to her. To ensure compliance, she’s unleashed the zords which she now has control of on major cities around the world.
To stop Rita, Tommy and Jason come up with a desperate plan that involves Jason piloting the Dragonzord to assault Rita’s Moon Base while Tommy sneaks in and fights the Black Dragon. Unfortunately, The Black Dragon grows and throws the Dragonzord into space with Jason still in it before turning his attention to Tommy, ending the comic.
What Works: I love how we’ve upped the stakes in this arc, especially for a typically Mighty Morphin Power Rangers story. To my knowledge, this is the only time in any iteration of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in which Rita has attacked somewhere other than Angel Grove California. Add to that her newfound control over the Zords, the Rangers’ lack of powers and of course, the awesome threat of the Black Dragon, and we have the makings of a truly epic story.
What Doesn’t: I can’t think of anything.
Overall: 5/5:
Yet another incredible entry in this series. The Power Rangers fan in me can’t get enough.
