Darkwing Duck #3 Review
Welcome back to Darkwing Duck. When we last left our hero, he was trapped in a prison housing all of his worst enemies with his nemesis and alternate universe doppleganger, Nega Duck leading the hunt against him. To make matters worse, Gosalyn is trapped within the prison as well. To make things even worse, Mortimer, one of Gosalyn’s classmates and former super villain has joined forces with Nega Duck.
We open with Darkwing trapped by a powerful illusionist named Mistressterious. Darkwing fights back as hard as he can, but the world of chaos that Mistressterious creates is too much for him. His only salvation comes in the form of Isis Vanderchill, an ice-themed villainess with a crush on Darkwing. Darkwing desperately tries to dodge Isis’s chilly advances and finally takes a page out of the Christmas Story playbook and tricks her into getting her lips struck to a pole.
Next up in the gauntlet is a villain called one-shot who seems to have Darkwing cornered until Gosalyn arrives to make the save. After making a sweet 90’s Alanis Morissette reference, Darkwing and Gosalyn move along. However, our hero’s luck soon runs out as a now soapier version of The Liquidator strikes and drags Darkwing before Nega Duck.
Nega Duck then reveals his master plan. Using Megavolt, Nega plans to power an enormous cannon to blast through the prison walls and obliterate Darkwing and Gosalyn in the process. As Nega Duck gloats, Mortimer slashes Darkwing’s tie. However, it turns out Mortimer has actually betrayed Nega Duck and slashed Darkwing’s rope. As all the villains attack, Darkwing uses The Liquidator and Isis Venderchill against one another to freeze all the inmates in place, thus saving the day.
In the aftermath, Nega Duck doesn’t seem to broken-up over his defeat. When Megavolt questions him, he simply says that he’s playing the long game and that he’s right where he needs to be.
Our comic ends with Mortimer walking home, with a mysterious figure hiding inside his backpack.
What Works: I think I’ve made it clear by this point how much I love Darkwing Duck, so I doubt I have to elaborate. Everything I love about Darkwing Duck is present in this comic. I particularly love the set ups for things to come. Nega Duck’s nonchalant attitude towards incarceration and the set up of Mortimer’s mysterious new ally were both incredibly effective. Speaking of, if Mortimer’s new friend is who I think it is, the next arc of the series will prove to be a fun one.
What Doesn’t: Frankly, I can’t think of anything.
Overall: 5/5
This series has been on a roll since it started and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down.
